Bohdan Burenko (Ukraine)_HEADS solo exhbition
Curators' Note:
In Bohdan Burenko's current exhibit "HEADS", his interest lies in portraiture but not in wanting to simply paint the reality of what he sees on the surface of an individual. Through his focus to see beyond a literal face; Burenko peers through the outside layers deeper into the individual and through his artistic interpretation paints the life force he senses.
As an observer of Burenko's work; we agree he has achieved his intentions beautifully and would like to add one more perspective to this work. In viewing this work we are reminded of philosopher G. I. Gurdjieff's words: "We must realize that we are very complicated machines, and so this process of breaking is bound to be a long and difficult task. Before real growth becomes possible, our personality must die."
In each of these paintings Burenko has seemingly captured a moment of "glitch" between one's awareness of their mechanical state while trying to break free to a higher state of being...to be conscious of one's self. It is this feeling of interplay of machine to man–or man to machine–state that makes Burenko's work a profound viewing experience.
