Dual Duel Satterugly x Play is Soul Food

Satterugly x Play is Soul Food (Mexico)

Inspiration for their Dual Duel:
The connection to develop this work has been a process in which we have been working as a duo artist since 2015 under the name of UGLY FOOD.

"What motivates me the most about the collaboration is the way in which Play is soul food uses recycled materials and reminds me of the importance of playing with materials, like a child who prefers the toy box than the toy itself."

"It is a very free process, but also like a puzzle. The recycled materials is part of our daily journey. When consuming products from our local stores, we instantly see that the packaging is inviting because they already tell a story. The element of recycling creates more journeys within the layers, like the walls in the streets." ~Satterugly

UglyFood was created in London in 2014 by artists Satterugly (Mexico) & Play Is Soul Food (United Kingdom).

They disigned the UglyFood Project as a platform to créate collaborative works of art that express a raw honesty about contemporary culture and social issues. Thier first collection of works was exhibited at Nomad Art Compound, Los Angeles,California in 2015. After some time in the U.S, UglyFood moved to Guadalajara, Mexico, where they now have based their art & design studio, and printmaking workshop; UglyFood House.

About the Artists:

Satterugly
Satterugly is a complex artist, opposed to the establishment and trends imposed by power of marketing. He explores different artistic techniques such as; graffiti, urban art and the fine arts. He considers the street a consistent plataform to generate social impacts.

In his work Satterugly looks into breaking the art historical paradigms, particularly involving his eschatological characters that always creates a shocking but powerful response from the audiences.

“In these themes, Satter finds a path to the human interior, to that most vulnerable of our parts, or to find the other side of the coin in our individual development. His work functions as a way to unmask us with a satirical, humoristic and uninhibited tone, as if that mask did not exist.“ ~Said Dokins

Play is Soul Food
Ivonne Adel- Bureos (a.k.a Play Is Soul Food) has created works that challenge the senses and broaden the understanding on what ‘Play’ really means in todays societies and cultures through experimental printmaking.

Play is a powerful tool in creating bridges, refining skills, using the imagination, and invention. It's how we evolve and develop on our own and with others as teams. In collaborations, we create new languages and stories. Creating our own history with the materials we leave behind.

“Play is so important in our lives, and has been ever since we were born. It’s how we learn, develop, grow, evolve, motivate and inspire ourselves and others…”

Raised in Scotland, and worked and lived in many cities around the world, Play Is Soul Food returned to Mexico to explore further the meaning and understanding of printmaking in todays society.

Formerly a fine art printmaking technician at top print workshops like Pace Editions, New York (now know as Pace Prints), and STPI, Singapore (Singapore Tyler Print Institute), Play Is Soul Food has also teamed up with one of Guadalajara’s most exciting street artist, painter and designer Satterugly. Together they collaborate under the name Ugly Food, and have created a fine art printmaking studio in central Guadalajara, named Ugly Food House.

The insight/inspiration into the work you created for Dual Duel:
The streets have always been a great inspiration for me. The layers of languages, the garbage we leave behind, it's our form of talking about our current affairs and also the history. The streets is our library and playground; holding all the information on our society, and how we communicate with each other.

When we play as Ugly Food we create jigsaw puzzles with messages. Documenting the experiences, journeys and adventures. Some are dark, some are light, and a lot is black humor. We try to be honest about our current everyday cultural and social states, in a raw and playful way.
