"Word Houses, Visual Journals and Idea Catchers"
De-Mystifying Artists' Journals
Jan/Feb 2004
Gallery 55, 55 So. First Street (at Post St.), Downtown San Jose
*

Dear Artists,

We have received a great number of responses from both within and outside of San Jose. After some discussion we have decided to open the show to artists outside of SAM/Phantom. So invite your fellow artists and if you want to play let us know ASAP so we can reserve your space.

Also many of you have asked if we want your raw journals or just the pretty ones. We want what you have...no editing...no "fixing"...we want the journals you "really" live in. So if that notion has been holding you back...don't! Come and play!

Here are the details about the show...

ABOUT THE SHOW
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The inner workings of an artist's mind are always a curiousity--and because most artists keep a series of idea books that demonstrate the "making of" many of their most important pieces, we're offering this "Word Houses, Visual Journals and Idea Catchers" show to de-mystify artist's journals and to illuminate the process of their making. This show will feature journal works in progress, wordhouses, random sketches, illustrated discovery journals, watercolor journals, found-object journals, audio journals, video journals, "Artist's Way" morning pages journals, lomo journals and other ways artists keep track of thoughts and ideas. Pages from selected journals will be blown up as posters to hang throughout the space. Journals will be on display and accessible for viewers to touch and read. Additionally, throughout the show, we'll be offering various journal workshops.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
---------------------------------------------------------------------
To participate in this show, please send an e-mail expressing your interest to: julie@divinegoddessdesigns.com or attend one of our preview sessions October 9th, November 6th at 11 - 1pm at Anno Domini 150 So. Montgomery Street Unit B (btwn Park & San Fernando)San Jose, CA t: 408.271.5151 (if you need another time let us know)

ARTIST JOURNALS
_

If you would like to exhibit your journal(s) please choose one to 1-3 of your best journals and bring them to one of our preview sessions. There, we will take photos of your journal and selected pages for display, help you make choices about what to show, and answer any questions you may have. These are loose sessions where you can drop in to see us any time during the session, and spend about fifteen minutes or so with us. Obviously, it's a first come, first serve thing-so be prepared. After the preview session, you will take your journals back home with you until the drop-off time on January 5th. We'll take custody of your work on that day, and put it in our gallery to be on display until March 1st, 2004. Please remember, during the open hours of the gallery, and during receptions and workshops, your journals may be handled and read by gallery patrons.

ART JOURNAL PRODUCTS
_

If you would like to create some products to inspire the community to journal, please start creating or collecting ideas. At your preview session, you can bring a prototype of what your product might be in the early stage of conception. Finished products will need to be ready January 5th and dropped off with your journals. If you are making items like coloring books or pens...consider creating 9 or more to create the look of volume in our little journal shop! Please make sure your item are labeled and priced when you drop them off.

Here are some ideas for products...

Journal Gems- Provide scraps for a small (4x4) bag of mixed fabric, paper and photos for journaling Coloring Books - Create a coloring book. You can print it on your printer and staple the corner or go fancy with it! Fancy Pens- Create a wild writing tool to journal with...Use your imagination!

AUCTION JOURNALS
_

If you want to participate in making a journal for auction, please let us know. SAM/Phantom will be buying the blank journals (Thank You, Brian & Cherri). They will be a "standard" size and type. Once you let us know you want to make an Auction Journal, we will give you the blank Journal on or before November 9. Proceeds from the auction will be split between SAM/Phantom, the organizers & the artist. These auction journals need to be dropped off on January 5th with the rest of your work for display or sale. The auction will be a silent one, the idea being that it will create repeat traffic from patrons committed to purchasing a specific journal. The auction will close for different journals at different events throughout the show-in hopes that the people who really want a specific journal will also attend our events.

PLAYSHOPS
_

If you would like to provide a 1 - 2 hour Playshop on some aspect of the Journaling process just let us know. Provide us with the name of the Playshop and provide us with a short description by October 31st.

We will work to help you fill your Playshop with students by creating a Playshop Calendar to be distributed from November 2003 to February 2004. The goal here is to inspire people to journal, create and have fun. This is a great opportunity for you to try out a workshop you've been developing or promote an existing class you offer.

Here are some ideas of Playshops we've already scheduled...

Window Souls & WordHouses with elizaBeth Benson- Using collage and everyday recyclables to reveal some soul identity
Watercolor Journaling with Christina Lopp- Journaling your travels with watercolors
Journal Tools with Julie Valentine-Exposure to many tools and techniques for journaling

Other ideas include:

Covers & bindings: Ways to cover journals as an extension of the journaling process.
Visual Journals: What to use when you can't use words-but still want to journal the truth
Artwork Journals: choosing a theme or motif for the year and making a book from that journey
Famous Artist Journals: diaries and other revealing looks into the ones who've gone before us

OPEN MIC
_

If you are willing to read from your journal-no more than a ten minute slot-please let us know that, too. The open mic will be held on the reception night-for 90 minutes during the reception. You can read from your own journal or from a famous artist's journal.

Phantom Galleries are temporary art exhibits occupying vacant storefronts in the downtown core of San Jose. The project aims to provide local artists with an opportunity to exhibit their work, while fostering economic development by drawing attention to available retail space. Our vision is to improve the collaboration between the city and local artists, creating a future of support between both. A bi-monthly rotation of art installations will take place through June 2004., including work from both individuals and organizations, encompassing the performing, visual and digital arts.

Phantom Galleries is produced by Two Fish Design, part of POPULUS Presents, a public space activation collective coordinated by the San Jose Downtown Association in partnership with the San Jose Redevelopment Agency.
