Latino Toons Artists Bios

Enid Balam (Mexico)
Enid Balam is an artist and craftsman from Cuernavaca, Morelos. He is currently part of the Master’s program in Artistic Production at the University of Morelos.  His work focuses on illustration, design, and independent editorials. His work can be divided into two major branches: commercial illustration, and contemporary art.

His personal work is centered on abstract comics, and his research of graphical narrative. Co-founder with Lía Ramírez of Planeta Gris Ediciones (2012), their focus is to publish work generated from collective workshops and commissioned print runs, producing high-quality silkscreen and alternative process fanzines in this fashion. Balam is the author of Rotor (2014), Fuerza Bruta (2013), Calle (2012), Incontenible (2012), and Mini Orgasmo (2012).

Muriel Bellini (Argentina)
Comics author and editor. Currently she is working on two parallel illustration projects: Grupo Piñas, which organizes group illustration exhibits around the world with other illustrators, and El Mentalista, a zine journal. Bellini self publishes story books and zine collections. Her work has been included in various anthologies, including Suspect Device (USA) and Alkom X (France).

Matías Bergara (Uruguay)
Comics illustrator, cover illustrator and t-shirt designer. Since 2008, he has been working commercially for editorials in Uruguay and around the world. With four graphic novels published alongside Rodolfo Santullo (writer), he is currently employed by BOOM! Entertainment and Darkhorse comics and is working on diverse projects, including The Sons of Anarchy comic.

André Ducci (Brasil)
Curitiban artist born in 1977, he studied engraving, and is known for his anatomical works. He began illustrating professionally for the skate company Drop Dead, and has since participated in projects such as Candyland, as well as having works published in comics and art magazines such as Simples, Velotrol, Entropia, Boca, Argh!!! (Czech Republic), and Stripburger (Slovenia). His work has also been featured in the new brasilian authors colection MSP+50 (2010), and FIERRO Brasil 2 (2012). He has illustrated a variety of books, including Guia de Ruas Sem Saída by Joca Reiners Terron (2012). He is a founding member of Latino Toons.

Charles Glaubitz (Mexico)
Mexican illustrator Charles Glaubitz lives in Tijuana, a block away from the beach where he used to surf, breakdance, freestyle and such since he was young boy. Born from a German-American father and mother from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, he is constantly juggling fine arts, illustration and comics work. His work has been recognized by American Illustration, Communication Arts, How Magazine, and Print Magazine.

Past clients have included: Rolling Stone Magazine, United Airlines, Converse, Asset International, San Diego Transit System, Timken Museum, and 1800 Tequila, just to name a few. He is currently working on The Star Seed Children and Secret Societer graphic novels, as well as the MacBurro webcomic, written by Giancarlo Riuz. He is a founding member of Latino Toons.

Raúl III (USA/Mexico)
Raúl Gonzalez was born in El Paso, Texas and grew up going back and forth between El Paso and Ciudad Juárez, México. In 2011 Beautiful/Decay in collaboration with Canson awarded him a Wet Paint Grant.  In 2009 Gonzalez received an award from the Artadia Foundation for Art and Culture. He was voted Boston’s best visual artist for 2010 by readers of The Boston Phoenix. His work has been exhibited widely in the northeast including The Drawing Center in New York, the Aidekman Gallery at Tufts University in Medford, MA and The Mills Gallery at the Boston Center for the Arts in Boston, Ogunquit Museum of American Art as well as on the west coast at SCION Installation, San Francisco Art Institute and Self-Help Graphics in Los Angeles. In 2010 he worked on his first large scale mural sponsored by the Boston Arts Commission installed in the neighborhood of East Boston. Gonzalez is committed to introducing youth to the visual arts and has taught in the education departments of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 2011 Gonzalez collaborated with over 125 kids from all over the city of Boston to create a work titled “and their Families” for the Linde Family Wing of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Gonzalez lives in Somerville, MA, with his lover Elaine Bay and their infant son Raúl, IV. He is represented by Carroll and Sons, Boston.

Tomás Ives (Chile)
Tomás Ives grew up surrounded by art books, wood cuttings, paintings and photographs. His work is primarily informed by pre-colombian art and mexican muralism. After deciding to set aside journalism in favor of a career in illustration, he has illustrated several books, and served as art director for various magazines. Much of his most recent illustrated work has been published by Editorial Pehuen, including: James Joyce’s Cats of Copenhagen (2014); Rudyard Kipling’s Son of the Elephant (2013); Mario Bellatin’s “Perros Heroes” (2012); Alfondo Alcalde’s Zapatos para Estubigia (2011). His work also appeared in the November 2010 - March 2011, Illustrator for Rolling Stone Magazine Chile. He is a founding member of Latino Toons.

His two most recent solo exhibitions include the October 2012 solo art show at Maison Du Chili, Paris France, and his February 2013 solo art show at Centro Cultural Carcel, in Punta Arenas, Chile. He has been awarded the 2013 Latin American Illustration prize by AI-AP, New York; and the 2010 Concorso Tapirulan winner, awarded in Cremona, Italy. He currently splits his work and time between galleries in Santiago and New York City.

Rita Ponce de León (Peru/Mexico)
Originally having from Lima, Peru, Rita Ponce de León works and lives in Mexico City since 1994. Her work aims to explore the communicational space between people close to her, including friends and family, and to flesh out the intricacies of the social environment which surrounds them.

Her work has been exhibited at Kunsthalle Basel (Switzerland), the Cuenca Art Bienial (Cuenca, Ecuador), the Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros (México D.F.), Galería 80M2 (Lima, Peru), the Museum of Modern Art (México D.F.), the New Museum (New York), and the Centro Cultural Border (México D.F). In 2013, her work was published in Vitamin D2 by Editorial Phaidon. She is currently working on her latest graphic novel, VA, for Sur+ editorial.

LUTO (Colombia)
Comic book artist, illustrator and zinester, Luto studied and received a Master’s degree in Fine Arts. His works have been published in magazines such as LARVA (Colombia), Malpensante (Colombia), Carboncito (Peru), TACO DE OJO (Mexico), and the Robot zine (Colombia). He has illustrated posters and flyers for various events, focusing primarily on the music scene.

He self publishes his own fanzines, and is the author of a slew of characters, including Carefukyou, Niña gallinazo and others. His works have been exhibited in various individual and group expositions, nationally and abroad.

Cristian Mallea (Argentina)
Script-writer, illustrator, and professor. His work has been published in Latin America, Europe and the US. He has drawn El Eternauta, and publishes regularly in the magazine Fierro (Argentina), in addition to making comics for the North American market.
He has written scripts for Carlos “Chingolo” Casalla, Horacio Lalia, Carlos Aón, Gervasio and Jok. Currently he works illustrating concept art, and movie posters, as well as all kinds of commercial illustration, in addition to his comics work.

In 1999 he founded the Eugenio Zoppi school of illustration which he directs with other members of the Moron comics collective La Productora. He is also a professor of illustration in the University of Palermo, Buenos Aires, and at ISFD No88 “Paulo Freire” in La Matanza. His works have been exhibited in Europe, Latin America and Asia. He is also active in the international comics’ festival of Historieta Bajo Tierra and the Festival Internacional de Frontera, in Moron.

Marcelo Mosqueira (Argentina)
Born in 1966, in Buenos Aires. Mosqueira's main focus as an illustrator is in comics and dark humor, in the vein of Argentinian humorists, with an evident predilection for underground comix. His work has been published in magazines such as Cerdos&Peces, Fierro, Humor Vitreo, La Baba, Hamartia, Vlov, El Oficio de la Tinta. His works have been exhibited in the Cultural Center of San Martin, the Borges Cultural Center and the Alianza Francesa in Argentina.

NAVA (Mexico)
Born in Mexico City, and constantly on the move since then. NAVA is a researcher, cartoonist, illustrator, designer and script-writer. He is a founding member of the Latino Toons collective, and editor of the Taco de Ojo comics and poetry anthology. His comics have been published in various magazines and zines, including Burlesque (Argentina, 2009), Pachamama Zombie (Bolivia, 2009), Lesparragusanada (Ecuador, 2011), and Taco de Ojo (Mexico, 2013 & 2014). He has participated in individual exhibits in Mexico, and group exhibits in Colombia, Argentina, and Brazil.

NAVA has a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, and a Master’s degree in Latin American Studies, and has realized over 450 interviews with different comics and caricaturists from Latin America, mapping their stories. He has been awarded the Watson Fellowship (2008) in relation to his research, amongst other awards, and has presented his findings on Latin American Comics and Cartoons in International Book Fairs and specialized academic congresses in Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico and the US.

Jorge Pérez Ruibal (Peru)
Born in 1978 in Lima, Jorge Pérez Ruibal studied fine arts at the Catholic University in Peru, interrupting his studies to dedicate himself fulltime to self-publication. He has since created numerous zines, including Trulopolis I & II, and had a collection of his work published in Animal 2009. His comics have been published in Argentina, Brazil, Lithuania, Mexico, Peru, Spain and the United States. He has participated in collective exhibits in Colombia, Lithuania and France. His first solo exhibition was in 2008 at the Galería LDF in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and he has since participated in various international exhibits, including United Dead Artists in Galerie Central (Belgium, 2010). He is a founding member of Latino Toons.

He is cofounder of the peruvian engraving collective La Gubia Roja, and is currently working on finishing his first graphic novel for Pictorama.

Marco Tóxico (Bolivia)
Bolivian artist known for his work in illustration, engraving and comics. Self-publishing since 2005, he edited the magazine Gringo Muerto (2005-2009) and the zine Divino Golfo (2004-2007). His work has been exhibited in Argentina, Germany, Belgium, Brazil, China, Colombia, Ecuador Japan, Spain, France, Iran, Mexico, Peru, Taiwan, South Africa, Russia, Ukraine, and Venezuela.

In 2012 he was selected as one of the 10 best illustrators in the COW International Design Festival (Ukraine). In 2014, his poster art was recognized amonst the best works in the international Poster4Tomorrow festival, and selected as the official art for the Montreal Films du Monde Festival (Canada). He recently published ESTÉRIL, his first comics anthology.

Oscar Zalles (Bolivia)  
Illustrator and graphic designer from La Paz, Bolivia, with a BFA from UMSA (2009). His work has been commissioned by Editorial 3600, the magazine Bolivian Express, La Hoguera editorial, La Razón newspaper, Jiwaki magazine, and by the Autonomous Plurinational Government of Bolivia. He has illustrated the graphic novel El Kusillo (2009), for which he won the Petrobras graphic novel prize, and has worked as a colorist on Periférica Blvd (2013), and La Venganza Boliviana (2010) anthology. Adittionaly, he has drawn and colored Boliche (2014), edited by Pezarbóreo from Chile, Chiyara (2013), and Comic Z (2010-2012) for GAMLP.

He has received numerous awards, including 1st place in the Municipal comics competition of Cochabamba (2014) for El asombroso niño de siquimira, and 2nd place in the Municipal comics competition of La Paz (2014).
