Light Hits aka Kelie Bowman and Jessie Rose Vala

Goddess Talk is a collaboration between artists Kelie Bowman and Jessie Rose Vala.
This project begin as an exploration into humor, improvisation, failure, low-fi special effects, and new age philosophy. We aim for Goddess Talk to occupy the space between a public access television show and a really fun acid trip. Goddess Talk is modeled after a late night public access show, with hosts Melody, played by Jessie Rose Vala and Serenity, played by Kelie Bowman. Goddess Talk attempts to create humorous yet earnest explorations of New Age approaches to self-improvement. Through these explorations, the Goddesses often fail, delving into the idea of failure, sitting in the awkward moments of it. The tongue and cheek comedy, is often tested through physical acts, a push-up that is not able to be completed or a re-enactment of the eclipse by the two goddesses rolling over each other on the floor. Each episode shifts from a set of decorative, homeopathic, and art objects to majestic natural landscapes. Goddess Talk exhibits a finely-honed lo-fi aesthetic, featuring dated text and motion graphics, colorful glitches and a cast of flying animals and pop tarts. Goddess Talk offers a critical exploration of the commercialism of wellness therapies and theories, important to consider in our age of quick-fixes and online searches.

Going beyond the humorous, this project pursues the artists’ attempts to find our own methods of freeing ourselves from contemporary oppressive forces. We see Melody and Serenity search for connection and healing through a montage of scenes displaying the frenetic pace of our minds and culture.

Kelie Bowman
Kelie grew up in Clearwater, Florida close to the beach. Kelie went to college at the University of Florida, and began making videos and sculptures. She joined a circus and ran off with them. They were called Cloud Seeding Circus of the Performative Object. Kelie then ran away to Germany to lead bike tours one summer and her travels took Kelie to New York. Kelie’s house burned down on Super Bowl Sunday of 2004, the same night she decided to start a gallery with this guy named Sto. Ten plus years, Cinders is still going, now as a non-profit organization. Kelie makes music and art in the bi-coastal band, Light Hits. She has exhibited internationally, painted several large scale murals and has work in the permanent collection of MOMA, the New York Public Library, RISD, Yale University, St. Johns University and other prestigious institutions. The NYPD ran her over on her bike and broke her back and pelvis, but Kelie is fine now and likes to go on walks outside and plan her career as a manatee camp counselor one day…
